Can someone explain what the yellow heart emoji next to a friend’s name on Snapchat means? I often see it, but I’m not sure what it indicates about our friendship status.

The yellow heart (💛) on Snapchat is actually the very first step in the “Best Friends” emoji system. It means you and that person are each other’s #1 Best Friend — but just recently.
You both send the most snaps to each other, more than to anyone else.
It usually shows up when two people have been snapping a lot back and forth consistently.
It’s kind of Snapchat’s way of saying, “Hey, something’s starting here.”
From personal experience, the yellow heart can feel exciting. It’s like the beginning of a connection — whether it’s a new friendship, a close bond forming, or even the early stage of something more.
If it turns into a red heart later, it means the connection is holding strong. But even the yellow one? It’s a good sign you two are clicking.

On Snapchat, the yellow heart emoji next to someone’s name means you and that person are each other’s #1 Best Friend on the app. Basically, it’s Snapchat’s way of saying you send snaps to them more than anyone else, and they also send snaps to you more than anyone else. It’s mutual, so both of you have to be each other’s top contact for it to appear.
It’s different from just having them as a “Best Friend” (which is marked with a smiley face). The yellow heart shows the closest snap activity between two people. If you keep snapping each other regularly, the yellow heart can change to a red heart after two weeks, and eventually into two pink hearts after a couple of months — those show an even longer streak of being each other’s top person.
If the yellow heart disappears, it means one of you started snapping someone else more, so the mutual #1 status is gone.
